CIC member Jan Nuttall arranged this excursion for the Archaeology Circle.
In very windy weather Ioanna led us up to the Fortezza and explained how the fortress was used as a refuge for the population during the Venetian period.
The subsequent tour of the Old Town was mainly about buildings from the Turkish period and the coexistence of Christians and Muslims during that time.

Excursion to the Minoan Potter at Heraklion
Lecture on pottery by Dr. Doniert Evely, and practical demonstration by Vassilis Politakis
CIC member Jan Nuttall arranged this excursion for the Archaeology Circle.
During the introducing lecture, archaeologist Dr. Doniert Evely explained how prehistoric objects from clay are being analyzed using the most modern technical methods.
These include radiocarbon dating, X-ray examination and bombardment with radioactive particles. It is possible to detect from where the early potters of Crete and the Aegean got their material and also their technical skills.
Then Vassilis Politakis who has studied the methods and designs of Minoan culture showed us these old methods of modelling and burning clay in practice.
